Introduction
Martinique is a beautiful tropical island located in the Caribbean Sea. It is both a French region and a French department — its official number is 972. The island has around 350,000 residents and covers about 1,130 square kilometers. The capital city is Fort-de-France, a lively and colorful place by the sea.
Even though it is far from Europe, Martinique is part of France and also part of the European Union. People there speak French, use the euro, and vote in French elections. But at the same time, they have their own strong Caribbean identity.
Location of Martinique
Martinique lies in the Lesser Antilles, between Dominica to the north and Saint Lucia to the south. It is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. If you look at a world map, you’ll find it on the east side of Central America, close to other islands like Guadeloupe and Barbados.
Because of its location, Martinique has a warm tropical climate all year round, which makes it a perfect destination for nature lovers and tourists.
Geography
Martinique is a volcanic island with very diverse landscapes. In the north, we find the Mount Pelée volcano, the highest point of the island with 1,397 meters. The north is green and mountainous, covered with tropical rainforests, waterfalls, and rivers.
The south is flatter, with white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, and coconut trees. The island’s nature is amazing — you can go from the humid forest to dry savannas and coral reefs in only a few kilometers.
History
The history of Martinique begins with the Amerindian peoples, the Arawaks and the Caribs. Christopher Columbus landed on the island in 1502, but France officially colonized it in 1635.
During the colonial period, French settlers created sugar plantations and brought enslaved Africans to work there. Slavery was abolished in 1848, a very important date for the island.
Another dramatic event happened in 1902, when Mount Pelée erupted and completely destroyed the city of Saint-Pierre, killing almost 28,000 people. Today, the ruins of Saint-Pierre remind everyone of that tragic moment.
Over time, Martinique rebuilt itself and became the modern, dynamic island that we know today.
Cuisine
Martiniquan cuisine is a mix of African, European, and Caribbean influences. It’s full of flavor, color, and spices.
After using local ingredients and traditional Creole spices, people prepare delicious dishes like:
• Ti-nain morue: a typical dish made of green bananas (called “ti-nain”) and salted codfish. It’s simple but very tasty and often served cold with oil and onions.
• Féroce d’avocat: a spicy appetizer made with mashed avocado, cassava flour, and salted codfish, mixed with chili pepper.
• Colombo chicken: one of the most famous dishes of the island. It’s a kind of Caribbean curry with chicken, vegetables, and a special mix of spices like turmeric and cumin.
Music
Music is a big part of Martinican culture. The island is known for its joyful rhythms such as biguine, bèlè, reggae, and of course, zouk, a world-famous style created by the group Kassav’.
Every year, Martinique hosts a huge celebration — the Carnival of Fort-de-France — where music fills the streets for several days. People wear colorful costumes, play drums, dance, and sing in Creole.
