It's obvious that India is a traditional land with some social and economic features of an underdeveloped country.

. It's a rural country with two main economic sectors : the agriculture and the textile industry.

Furthermore, India is a society suffering from a high rate of illiteracy, a high poverty and a important inequality between hits habitants with a rigid cast system. P20 AND P21 book

A) INEQUALITIES BETWEEN MEN AND WOMEN

Inequalities between men and women are very present in this country.Womens in India suffer from a male dominated society, the girls are regarded as second-class citizens.

In India, the family has to pay a dowry for the weddings that's why there is many infanticides in India. Baby girls are killed because they are a burden.

B) INEQUALITIES BETWEEN INDIANS CITIZENS

One of the most important problem in India is the cast system.

With the document intutilated « The dalits » we learnt how the Indian society works.

The population is divided into five hereditary social classes from the BRAHMANS ( the top class) to the UNTOUCHABLES or DALITS ( the lowest class) who are impure and can't have personal relations with the members of the others castes who can't rebel againts the rules of their caste if they want to be reincarnated in a higher caste.

2) « INDIA IS ON THE MARCH » : A MODERN COUNTRY

Many changes have occured in India over the last 30 years. The country is now in a process of rapid economic development.

In the text « Changing India » the narrator came from India but he has never been to India up to now. He decided to go in India by himself to make up his own mind about the country. Before he had prejudices about it but India has changed. The farms have given way to factories, the couples can divorce, untouchables children can go to school... The main change is people's mentalities. Now they can decide for themselves.
