The Gothic novel is a literary phenomenon which appeared in England in the second half of the XVIIIth century and which was rediscovered further to the Gothic architecture.

First, gothic novel is an English literary genre. A gothic novel is characterized by the presence of a haunted castle, as in Dracula or Castle haunted, presence of a castle haunted or not «Old castle», «castle haunted» dark scenery such as cemeteries as in Dracula «old ruined chapel use as a graveyard» or night scenery.

In a gothic novel, there are characters that are importants and are often vampires as in Dracula whereas in castle haunted it is a man, a human but also religious figures, demons, angels, bandits, beats... In a gothic novel, the scene of history are often very mysterioys, places that in life can scare us, scare us are darkness, haunted and abandoned houses, old ruins of old building, gothic architecture as Dracula «heavy door», «stone passage», «coffin» so very dark and gothic. In Castle Haunted the story take place in Haunted castle connected with secret passage which leads «to the church of St Nicolas». Both castles possess a vault. So in Dracula and in Castle Haunted vocabulary are «dark» «at night» «sink» «use lamp»..

It also recognizes a gothic novel following the situation. Indeed, in a gothic novel use often find situations like vampirism or suicide or many others... In both stories, the atmosphere is mysterious, strange, affraid and oppressive. In Dracula, there is «a mortal sick smell». In this two stories and in the literature gothic there are things supernatural, and a lot of emotion of the characters. The character is afraid, the character sobs, in the «gooseflesh», shouts, «scream» as in Castle haunted. So in Castle haunted the «door opened», character listen «sound mysterious», look «silhouette person», «sream..»

In spite of these two texts have of lot and in big left that similarities there is a difference at the level of the narration. Indeed, Dracula is written and told to the first person whereas Castle haunted is written and told to the third person
