I am going to talk to you about spaces and exchanges. This notion refers to a continuous movement or circulation. There are many types of exchanges: people, trade, and media. Etc

To my mind, we have worked in class, on the US Mexico border. It’s a very dangerous space because it’s such a large space, there are border patrol against drug trafficking, a lot of illegal exchanges happen at the border.

In order to illustrate this notion, I have chosen two documents.

The first document is the weekly magazine cover of The Economist.

It raises the problem of immigration on American economy. We can see on the picture a road sign which shows a running family with the word CAUTION. The little girl is being dragged along by her parents; she can’t keep up with her parents.

The author’s aim is to warn the population against the dangers of immigration. On the one hand, migrants think that if they work hard the USA will be the land of opportunities and so, they are able to take lots of risks. One the other hand, immigration may be a factor of unbalance because immigrants need benefits, jobs, housing… That’s why the author writes on the picture “How and when to open the door to migrants”.

The second document is an extract from a novel entitled “Texas” written by a novelist MICHENER. It deals with undocumented immigrants trying to sneak across the US-Mexico border.

The migrants need the help of guides, they named smugglers. The migrants’ fate is in their hands. They are made to pay the smugglers who are very aggressive and threatening. They are taking advantage of the situation. The Mexicans were trapped by the greedy smugglers; they were left stranded in the desert. They felt panic-stricken and scared to death. They were betrayed by them.

The author sides with the Mexicans. He wonders if the borders and the USA are a refuge for immigrants.

Immigration is a real social problem.

Both documents refer to immigration in USA. We mustn’t forget that, it’s not only USA problem but it’s a world problem.

For example, in Europe we often talk about the town: Calais. In their town, a lot of migrants try to cross the sea, to get in United Kingdom. In Africa, migrants try to cross the sea by boat, in order to get to Europe. Unfortunately, many migrants drown themselves.

I have the feeling that this event can’t stop.

On the one hand, migrants don’t have any other choice but to leave their home country, to feed their family.
