IS IT RIGHT TO FORCE PEOPLE TO LEARN ENGLISH WHEN THEY WANT TO BECOME BRITISH CITIZEN?

When a person wish takes the nationality or become a citizen in one country, the person needs to be naturalized. It is therefore natural to learn and understand the culture of this country. In fact, the future citizen must know habits and custom of his host country and incorporate them. Then He must to learn about his country, the history, the language…

So, the legal requirements for naturalisation are:

• Hold indefinite leave to remain in the UK for 12 months

• Have lived legally in the UK for five years

• Be of "good character", as deemed by the Home Office. I think this one is very funny.

• To show sufficient knowledge of life in the UK, either by passing the Life in the United Kingdom test or by attending combined English language and citizenship classes.

• Meet specified English, Welsh or Scottish Gaelic language competence standards.

I think it’s normal to force people to learn English when they want to become British citizen, because we must to integrate him to live in England. Indeed a new coming who wants to find a job and have social life must to talk the same language that residents. I believe that it’s the more important requirements to speak in the same language.
