Interview

Welcome on BBC radio, I am your host xxxxxx and today we are going to talk about Hijra. For that I am gonna interview xxx a hijra who came just for us from India. Hello xxx thank you for being here ! Can you talk to us about you ?

: Hello xxxx thank you for having me i'm glad to be here ! So like you said i am what people call in India a Hijra. I am 22 years old and i'm currently a disciple in the unix which is an hijra community

: Nice so since it's not very known here can you define the term Hijra ? People are very curious. In France you know we call people like you transgender so what exactly is the difference between the two terms ?

; I think the main difference is that the term Hijra includes trangender people and intersex people. Also we are considered as a third sex and not as « transgender woman or male ».

: Oh I see. And do you like being a hijra or is it difficult ? From what i've heard in testimony, people say that it's not an easy life to live. Can you describe how you feel about it and are you proud of your statue if i can call it like that ?

: I don't really know neither if we can seriously call it a statue but what I'm sure of is that what you've heard in my case is true. Being a hijra was for me the only way to be myself, I thought i could be a woman. So I didn't really had the choice. Like I told you right now i'm just a disciple so far but I can see many unhappy people who are hijra since 5-10-15 years and they just don't feel like they will ever fit in the Indian society. I think a lot about moving in another country so I could live a regular life, get a real job and be accepted. In india we are just consider as a third sex and religious things and i really don't like that.

: You are very mentally strong! I hope you will get the life you want someday.

So far you haven't talked about your family, so how do they feel about your situation ? Is it good or bad ? And do they understand your way of life ?

; My parents don't talk to me anymore, they really don't accept my life and i don't blame them. They don't understand at all but i hope they are going to change their mind.

: I hope too ! Last questions, do you want children in the future ? Do you have a lover ? I don't know how it works in the hijra  communities.

: Well yes I want a child in the future but I don't think it's possible now. And no I don't have a lover but if i move in another country i defenitly want one it would be easier for me.

: okay so thank you so much for this interview. I was very happy to meet you, thank you for answering so nicely ! Iwish you a good future and i hope every good things are going to happen to you because you deserve it.

So bye everyone, it was your host Romane on BBC Radio, See you soon !
