On the ad bellow we can see Santa Claus wearing a red and white suit, the typical colour of the Coca Cola brand. He looks very nice, with his long flowing whiskers and his well known big belly thanks to whom he looks like the most sympathetic old man. This is an ad meant to increase the attraction of the brand products and thus to spur its sales, that is why Santa Claus he is not only holding the popular Coca Cola bottle but he is also enjoying it, as his soulful eyes or his large smile show it to us. By using the slogan coke time and the idea of Santa Claus and thus the idea of Christmas itself the brand links its product (the coke) with the period of Christmas. Thanks to that process kids would think about coke when they see anything linked to Christmas. By doing so the brand creates a form of attraction and makes kids ask for Coke, indeed the ad was not aimed toward adults but directly toward children which is really smart due to the fact that during Christmas most of the parents want to make their kids happy and often yield at their desires giving them whatever they want. Then as the kids appreciates their drinks and that it was not too expensive compared to a present like a toy they often plan to buy some more frequently during the year which could have helped a burgeoning company like Coca Cola becoming a perennial aspect of the daily life or at least of Christmas. Moreover many urban stories arising out of this advertisement permitted to fuel the legend that Coca Cola might have invented Santa Claus which is an even greater way to advertise as it is probably the most famous and appreciate character at this time of the year. But the problem of this ad is that it is like double-edged ad, indeed people that like Christmas might like this ad, but people that dislike Christmas or simply do not celebrate it might dislike the ad and thus probably choose an other soda than Coke when they are shopping. That is the reason why we can say this type of ad may but also may not increase the sales of a product. I personally think that this ad did increase the sales of the brand because we can still see many of them, some were a bit modified threw years but yet they still exist which means that they were doing well.
