SOFIE’S HEART

(Hannibal Lecter Fanfiction)

It was summer 1984. She didn’t know why it happened. A simple thought crossed her mind and that was all. When it was done, she couldn’t remember when she had decided to act but she had. She was smiling and proud of what she achieved. The blood was spreading so fast on the ground. She felt amazed: how could that small animal contain so much life? Yes, the blood on the ground was life, taken away by her own hands. She couldn’t take her eyes away from what she was seeing. A new feeling spread into her all body: freedom. For once in her life, she made her own choice, without influences from anyone. She was all covered with blood from her hair to her knees, as she wanted to admire her work closely. She started to stare at her hands, instead of a peach skin, they both had the colour of her crime: red. The smell started to get more and more unbearable, thanks to the heat. Though, she was not the kind of girl who enjoyed violence, everybody knew that, as did she. She had always defended the weak with words, not with fists. She was a thin, calm girl, a good example for the others as her teachers used to say. The apple of her parents' eyes, who was always taught good manners. She realised what she had done. What was wrong with her? She took a life away but … for no reason. A free act. No: a sick act.

Suddenly, a kid’s shriek took her off her thoughts. She turned around, got up and stared at the kid, who was crawling on the ground, calling for his father to hurry and look what the evil girl did to her puppy.

The room was silent. The only sound you could hear was the ticking of the clock. 17.29. In one minute, Doctor Lecter would come in, sit at his desk, flick through some papers (probably her file) and finally, look at her. The look was disturbing, but she still liked him. He had taste and good manners. He expressed himself like no one else. She considered it explained his charm. That, and his delightful accent. Of course she acknowledged his cleverness, and as he was one of the best psychiatrists of the state, she could have expected that. He helped her understand who she really was. She had been violent to herself but also to her nurses, after she entered the psychiatric section of the Hospital because of the puppy incident. Like that one time, when she decided to jab a fork into the hand of one of the latter, without warning. She usually starts to cry, apologise and ask for mercy afterwards.

“Good morning, Sofie, how are you on this wonderful day?” She knew it was just his polite side talking, he didn’t really care what her answer would be cause he would know how she was doing, just by the look he would give her. He had proved that point many times in the previous sessions. Dr. Lecter could read anyone; which scared her at first. Later she would start to trust him. Had he calculated that fact and done anything to earn this trust? Probably. He knew what he was doing. He chose the appropriate words that would make a person react the way he wanted, knowing their nature.

“So, tell me, dear, did your parents come to visit you?”

He knew they hadn’t. Sofie had had the same sad face ever since her mother had told her that she loved her but needed time to understand
