I am going to use 3 documents to tell you about the notion “Myths and heroes”. The two first documents I’m going to work with are about the famous speech of Martin Luther King : I have a dream. I will also use a picture of Mount Rushmore to illustrate the notion.

Everyone has already heard about the American dream ? yes of course because in the opinion of many people the USA are bigger and more beautiful than any other country, that’s why everyone dreams to go there. Certainly also because it is a myth ! But what’s a myth ? For me, it’s a story about superhuman or heroes of an earlier age. So, following this definition of myth, America would have some heroes... Of course it has and that’s what I am going to talk about.

My first document, which I will put in relation with the second as they have the same subject, is a photo of Martin Luther King during his famous speech. The scene takes place in the 28th of August 1963, in Washington D.C. where white people manage the country. On this picture we can see Martin Luther King, the hero, in the foreground and a lot of people in the background which gives us the impression that he is their leader ! And I think he is because the speech he gave on this day was definitely very strong. At this moment, even if slavery had been abolished in the USA ; racism, discrimination and segregation were still there. And that’s what Luther King was fighting against. He wanted black people to have the same rights as white people who weree alone at the top of the country. To get this, he tried to convince all the people listening to him that they have to fight with him but without violence. He became them leader in the fight for the Civil rights. On the picture we can see the paper with the speech that Martin Luther King holds in his left hand. This speech is the task of the second document. I don’t think you can find a more famous speech than : I have a dream ! Everyone knows this freedom speech. His dream was the equality between black and white people. And even if at this time the government was only made of white people, he asked it to be half black and half white. Unfortunately, in 1968, Luther King was killed because white people didn’t agree with his desire to share the power of USA. We can now see that his dream and even more became true as, since 2008, a black man called Obama is the American president. We can call Martin Luther King a hero, as he is one of the people at the beginning of the fight against racism and discrimination.

My third document is a picture of the Mount Rushmore which is in the state of Dakota, precisely in Keystone. Mount Rushmore is a mountain where four faces are carved in stone. These four sculptures represent four of the most important president of American history. From left to right we can see : George Washington who was the first president of the USA from 1789 to 1797, Thomas Jefferson, president from 1801 to 1809 who drafted and signed the Declaration of Independence, Theodore Roosevelt who was the youngest president from 1901 to 1909 and finally Abraham Lincoln, president from 1861 until 1865 when he was murdered. Lincoln has a link with Martin Luther King as he kind of “started” his work because he abolished slavery. All of these 4 presidents have a special place in American history, in which they represent the first 150 years, and are seen as heroes. To comeback to Mount Rushmore, these sculptures were done
