DEVOIR N°1 ANGLAIS

LABOR OFFICIALS SCRUTINIZE A RISE IN UNPAID INTERNS

EXERCICE 1:

1. Right: With job openings scarce for young people, the number of unpaid internships in the United States has climbed in recent years, leading regulators to worry that more employers are illegally using such internships for free labor. The number of unpaid internships is rising quickly.

2. Right: The Labor Department says it is cracking down on companies that fail to pay interns properly and expanding efforts to educate companies, universities and students on the law regarding internships.

3. Wrong: many fear they will become known as troublemakers in their chosen field, endangering their chances with a potential employer.

4. Wrong: If you're a for-profit employer or you want to pursue an internship with a for-profit employer, there aren't going to be many circumstances where you can have an internship and not be paid and still be compliance with the law.

5. Right: While many universities are accepting more moderate-and low-income students to increase economic mobility, many students and administrators complain that the growth in unpaid internships undercuts that effort by favoring well-to-do students, the speeding their climb up the career ladder.

Part 2

The Labor department is trying to fine employers who do not respect the law, they try to make understand everybody who are involved that they are breaking the law. If they want to hire an intern, they have to be paid and the criteria that lead to unpaid internships are not fulfilled. And the criteria are scarce.
