'Fish and chips' is a popular take away food in English speaking countries, that's to say Great Britain, Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand. It is not rare to find chippers (fish and chips shops) in South Africa. It seems to be a Portuguese meal imported in United Kingdom by Jews in the 19th century.

It consist in a breadcrumbs based on beer, but many variants exist. The tradition expect that fish and chips is fried thanks to beef dripping or even lard. Nowadays, vegetables oils, such as peanut oil are predominant. By this way, the dish is suitable for Muslims, and people belonging to movements that forbid to eat meat.

The fish used to prepare the famous meal is very variable, according to the region were it was fished. In Ireland, it Is mostly the cod and the haddock which are employed, but we can find many species of white fish.

British chips are very thicker than the American ones, so called French fries. This kind of chips popularised fish and chips because they were used by big fast foods restaurants chains.

Fish an chips is often delivered in a newspaper sheet, but it becomes rare for evident questions of hygiene. That's why it most usual to sell fish and chips in special plastic plates like other take away food.
