Even with the abolition of slavery, tensions still remain between black and white americans. Through history we've seen many black figures such as Rosa Parks or Malcom X leading black americans to freedom however, there are still problems that need to be solved between both parts and that's why we still need black figures to defend black rights. So,  Who is the most powerful voice for the black community in the US today ? First I will present the chosen one then I'll display why and how he is possibly the best spokesperson at the moment for black community

Kendrick Lamar Duckworth  was born in Compton, California, on June 17, 1987. His parents had moved to Compton from Chicago to escape the city's gang culture, although Lamar's father had been associated with the notorious Gangster Disciples gang. As the 1980s crack trade and West Coast gang presence increased, Lamar grew up around precarious street activity. He was a good student who enjoyed writing poems and lyrics.Lamar's family was directly touched by the violence of the streets, yet he remained thoughtful and soft-spoken, ever the keen observer, even as a child. At age 16, in 2003, he circulated a mix tape and got a record deal with an independent label.

Pointintg out his background is very important, as he had the typical childhood of rappers and black american wich allows him to understand the people he stands up for in diverse ways.  2m50

First of all, he takes action for his community.  He has personally donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to support sports programs, after school programs, music programs in the Compton Unified School District to help keep Compton students off the streets and in the classroom. As a result, the rapper got honoured by the California State senator Isadore Hall, III for «  raising issues affecting his community »  and received a Generational Icon award.

Secondly, he is widely known in the music industry. Indeed, he has sold over eighteen millions albums, gathered more than  eight hundreds thirteen millions views on youtube and won forty four awards. This exposure, especially with seven Grammy's, gave him a chance to raise awardness on issues in black ghetto. He's also on the cover of many influential magazines such as Vogue or RollingStones wich means that he if wants to spread a message, he will be heard and he is very clear with his intentions.

In his interview with the New York Times Kendrick Lamar said that he wants to be a rôle model for the black community. He wants to get rid of the afro-american degrading cliche's : Tough, criminal who doesn't go to school and abandon his family. He advocates a more humble image of the black community and wants to break the taboo about mental illness and lgbt rights within the black community

Even if Kendrick Lamar decided to shy away from the social medias he is also responsive to news topics, as he proved by spreading hope and support through music 5min

The best exemple is the song « alright ».The music video director Colin Tilley wanted to demonstrate « how one man can basiccally spread positivity through all of the madness that's going on  ». During the video Kendrick Lamar and his crew roll through the city while throwing money to everybody. At the end, Lamar stands on a lampost, a policeman shoots him down and the rapper ends up with a smile while falling to the ground, implying that he's gonna be alright. 6min

The meaning of the song is as simple, as Kendrick Lamar talks about struggles, despair, injustice and that it's okay to feel discouraged .However  this song is there to remind you never to give up and that as said in the chorus, « we gon be alright »
