Fraud, Data, and Analytics

International Week 2021

Subject: Choose one fraudster from the microsoft teams list and describe this frauder.

I choose to speak about John Bodkin Adams because I think it’s a special and unusual fraudster so let me resume the story of that fraudster.

John Bodkin Adams was born 1899 in Ireland. He was a general practitioner, but he was a fraudster and serial killer between 1946 and 1956.

  • Almost 163 of his patients died while they were in a coma
  • 132 of 310 patients who died left Adams’s money or items their wills
  • He was accused and tried for the murder of one patient who died by morphing overdose.

A detective named Hebert HANNAM investigated for a long time on John Adams, he placed him under surveillance for 8 weeks. He finally found that Adams had received 45 000 pound (520 000 euros today) from 132 different wills and two Rolls Royce !

He was accused of 400 murders by the newspapers, but the criminal court (Old Bailey) declared him not guilty. The processed last 17 days in 1957 and it is by now the longest murder trial in Britain.

He was struck off the Medical Register for 4 years and practise again at Eastbourne in 1961 but he is accused by the Scotland Yard of around 163 deaths in his city.

He did “special injections” to his patients: the nurses didn't know what substance was inside these injections because they couldn’t get access to the room of the patient when Adams made these injections.

The operational mode made by Adams was simple, he first made his victim drugs addict then he influenced them change their wills in front of him and then gave them lethal doses of opiates or other drugs.

The principal cases of Adams are Mr and Mrs HULLET, Julia BRADNUM, Annie SHARPE:

Julia BRADNUM died at the age of 85, Adams succeeded in convincing Julia to sell him her house and to go with her to her bank to look at all the bank account details and so noticed she had not stated her beneficiaries in his wills.

The case of Annie SHARP is interesting. Annie was the proprietor of Barton it’s a boarding house where two sisters had lived, and these sisters were victims of Adams. Annie was considered by the detective Hannam as a key witness because Annie had tried to convince the two sisters to invest 5000 pound in what she called “her new business” but Adams was surely behind this demand. Why? Because when the two sisters died Hannam spot that the only person who were at the funeral was Adams and Annie. But after Annie met the detective Hannam she died from cancer a few days later…

He was charged for lying on cremation forms and for keeping dangerous drug register but also for prescription fraud. After being found non guilty, Adams continue to see some of his loyal patients and continued to prescribe over the counter medicine to them.

He was reinstated as general practitioner on November 22, 1961 and his authority to prescribe dangerous drugs was restored the following July.

John Bodkin Adams died in 1963 of a ventricular failure. This year signed the end of a crazy doctor fraudster.
