Al-Khwarizmi

Today, we have decided to present a part of the life of Muhammad Ilb Musa al-Khuwarizmi, also known as Al-Khwarizmi.

Al- Khwarizmi was born on 780 and he died on 850 in Baghdad. He lived during the Abbasid Dynasty so in the 9th century.  He was the first Persian's mathematician. He was very famous for his discoveries. Moreover, he was a geographer, astrologer, astronomer and a member of the “House of wisdom” precisely as the first director. His name is at the origin of the word “algorithm”

He wrote “The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing” approximately around 830 in which he studied the algebra and the Arabic numbers (but according the sources he works only with words and no numbers, so he explains equations with words). Latins looked at his work during the 12th century and then, introduced the algebra in Europe by his Arabic writings. He is often considered like a “father of the algebra”. In fact, he found the first systematic solution of linear and quadratic equations in Arabic. Some of his work was based on Persian and Babylonian astronomy, Indian numbers, and Greek mathematics. We can say that his algorithms changed the course of history… Al-Khwarizmi was inspired by many cultures during his life for his research.

We don’t have a lot of informations about his life, mostly about his discoveries, his work because he changed concretely the story and particularly the mathematics’ story.   At the end, we can say that Al-Khwarizmi marked the story of mathematics.

  • But…What is an algorithm?

An algorithm is a logical sequence of steps to solve a specific problem. It’s also, precisely now, a computer program in which mathematical rules, instructions and formulas are entered. We use it for coding or decoding a message or a mathematic problem.

We have decided to make an algorithm about the polynomials so about the 2nd degree (very simple!) and we want to make a test to see which one of you arrive to resolve this algorithm as quickly as possible. So you have…35 seconds…
