I'm going to tell you about Captain Salgueiro Maia who was one of the great heroes of the Portuguese Revolution

It will remain in history as one of the examples of moral greatness that gave freedom and democracy to the Portuguese people

Of course, no one makes a revolution on his own and many other servicemen deserve a reference. But Salgueiro Maia occupies a particular place in the history of April 25.

He is not only a personal hero but a hero of Portugal.

Salgueiro Maia was one captain of the Portuguese Army and when his country needed more he had the courage to command one of the most important days in the history of Portugal.

Maia's mission was to take and hold the government quarter "Vienna" which was the meeting point for senior officers who supported the regime at gunpoint

and with his famous speech he managed to convince the military to support him.

"Gentlemen, as you all know, there are various forms of state. The welfare states, the capitalist states and the state we are in. Now, in this solemn night, we are going to end this state!

So that anyone who wants to come with me, we go to Lisbon and finish it. This is voluntary. Who does not want to leave, stay here!"

After these words, spoken serenely but firmly Maia continued the plan with the help of the soldiers and marched over the dictatorship.

If it were not Salgueiro Maia leading the mission of overthrowing the regime with the soldiers he commanded, with all the determination, courage and conviction

probably would not have existed Carnation Revolution or at least could not have happened so peacefully.

For me that day he became a hero.
