        Winston Churchill Biography

        Winston Churchill was born on the 30th of November 1874 in Woodstock near Oxford to an aristocratic family. His father was Lord Randolph Churchill and his mother was Jeanette Jerome.

        Churchill grew up in Dublin, Ireland, where he was taken care by a nurse, Elizabeth Ann Everest. He was separated from his parents from an early age, and that brought him closer to his nurse. At this time he excelled at sports and joined the officer cadet corps.

He started school very late, at the age of seven and he joined St. George's School but he was a slow learner and because of that he wasn’t a very good student. In 1884 he moved to Brunswick School, he improved, but he still had his rebellious nature and he continued to misbehave. Later he wanted to gain as much military experience as possible and so, when he left school, he went to Sandhurst to train as an officer.

        When his training was completed, he received postings to Cuba and North West India and worked as a war correspondent. He started to be known for his books. Later he returned to the UK in 1900 to become a member of the parliament. In  1904 he made a dramatic shift by leaving the Conservative Party and joining the Liberal Party. After that he rose through different ranks and became President of the Board of Trade in 1908, Minister of Munitions in 1917, Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1924, and first lord of the Admiralty and a member of the war cabinet in 1939. At this time he was enthused to be involved in the ‘Great War’ and in May 10th 1940 he was made prime minister of Great Britain. He kept his rank during World War II and until the 26th of July 1945 when he was defeated in the general election. In March 1946 during the cold war he went to the USA where he did his famous "Iron Curtain" speech. Later in October 1951 he became prime minister for the second time until 1955.

Winston Churchill lived a very complex life and had lots of accomplishments. In his early life he might have gained the Victoria Cross altho he was a civilian. Much later in 1953, Churchill was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and earned the Nobel Prize for Literature for his books. On 12 September 1908 Churchill married Clementine Hozier together they had five children Diana, Randolph, Sarah, Marigold Frances and Mary.

Winston Churchill died on the 24th January 1965 at the age of 90 in London, a few days after he had a severe stroke. His health had been already very bad and he had already suffered of stroke in the past years.
