Let me begin by giving you a definition of the notion. Generally speaking, a hero is a person who is admired for having done something very brave or having achieved something great. A hero could be seen, in the opinion of others, as a role model or ideal thanks to his special achievements, abilities or personal qualities. Regarding to this notion, I’m going to speak about modern day heroes. In our nowadays society, heroes are still recognized but not on the same point of view as in the past because morals evolve. I can characterize a modern hero such as people who have made, and are making a difference in their communities or in the world. I’m going to quickly give you a definition of what modern stands for for me: it is relating to the present or recent times as opposed to the remote past. We may wonder about who is a modern day hero ? My presentation will be based on two points: first of all, I will concentrate on modern day hero accepted and recognized from all around the world before finally focusing on our personal modern day heroes.
At the turn of the 21st century, thanks to or because of progress our mentalities changed because the world changed. A new generation of heroes are born: the modern day heroes. From my point of view, a modern day hero is fighting for inequalities which are unfortunately persisting in our modern world. Almost everybody is moved by modern days heroes, who are the one giving a lot of their time, and are inspirational for everyone. Their acts could also be recognized by the top executives. Malala’s speech is a good example of what a modern day hero do. The 21 woman is an activist for women rights and advocate for children’s education. During this speech Malala said she was proud to represent her country, Pakistan as the youngest winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. To my knowledge, this extract is particularly interesting on account of modern day heroes being rewarded with the Nobel Prize, thanks to their good acts.
Writers, activists, soldiers, volunteers, parents or friends … We all have our own heroes. Yet, although some criteria for heroism are universally accepted. Consequently, a modern day hero could be an everyday hero. In my opinion, everybody can add heroic values into our everyday life. Let’s take the case of teenagers who are rewarded by BBC with Teen awards. Every year, BBC honors the outstanding young talents who all have proven their devotion to help others through selfless, brave and exceptional achievements. They are young, and represent a new generation of heroes. They are modern day heroes. Their acts are probably on a limited scale but they mostly have an impact in our everyday life.
All in all, I’d like to end by saying that a modern day hero is someone who is achieving something worthy of a hero, for our nowadays unfair society; even if the acts are touching the whole word or just us.
