“Now I can look at you in peace; I don't eat you any more.” said the author Franz Kafka. Meat has been part of our diet for million of years. With the population growth, the demand for meat is getting bigger and bigger each year. The companies which provide this «product» need to fulfil this massive demand, but the solution that they chose is horrifying. Humans should stop eating meat and become vegetarians because it’s healthier for the human body, it will help the environment and harmless animals won’t be killed.

We often hear that if you stop eating meat, you will have nutritional deficiencies, but that is a false argument. Over the years, studies have shown that a vegetarian and vegan diet is healthier than a meat-eating diet. There are many positive effects that come from becoming vegetarian. The first one is that it’s a great way to lose weight. In fact, meat-eaters are more likely to be obese than vegetarians. “A vegetarian diet is the only diet that has passed peer review and taken weight off and kept it off.” (www.alternet.org) The second positive effect on your health is that it reduce considerably your chance of getting several disease, like heart disease, cancer and strokes. Animals are injected with hormones and stimulants which increase “the risk of hormone-related cancers such as breast and prostate cancer” (www.pcrm.org). In short, a vegetarian diet is a lot healthier than a meat-eating diet.

Our planet is becoming sicker each year with the constant increase of global consumption that comes from the population growth. The meat industry is generating so much pollution from their production. In fact, more than the half of global greenhouse-gas is generated by the agriculture that we use to feed the animals that we will eventually kill, instead of feeding the million of people dying from hunger.[1] Also, the industry of meat takes enormous amount of water to grow the food for the animals, to wash the farms that they live in and to give them something to drink. In fact, “it takes more than 2,400 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of beef” (www.peta.org). Finally, we should use our land to feed the population instead of feeding the animals that we will later kill and eat. If everyone on the planet stopped eating meat, it will considerably reduce the pollution that we create daily.

The modern factory farms are treating the animals like a simple product. They live in horrible conditions. On a daily basis, animals are beaten, injected with hormones and stimulants to make them bigger faster, so they can get killed when they are still young, they are left to die when they get old or sick, etc. They also live in miserable environment. Animals also have feelings and I think that our society forgot that aspect. They are not even treated like living creatures. Someone once told me that when we eat meat, we eat fear. In fact, «the animals would not survive at all but for the fact that they are fed huge amounts of antibiotics» (www.happycow.net). In short, animals should be respected like any humans. They are not our propriety, they do not belong to us.

Humans should stop eating meat and become vegetarians because it’s healthier for the human body, it will help the environment and harmless animals won’t be killed. The consequence of the mass industry of meat is horrifying. It’s time to make a change in our diet. Will you be able?
