The African American Flag :

David Hammons is born in Springfield, Illinois on July 24, 1943 to a single mother (his dad died), he was concerned by segregation because of his skin

he works as an artist and combines aesthetics with political statements. standing in the Black society in America. His works have been described as simple yet powerful with an award message to everyone that sees it.

The flag that he created in 1990 was a gift to the studio museum in Harlem that you can see in the photograph, this museum is devoted to the art of African American.

In 1920, The UNIA flag, also named Pan-Flag, was created in response to the enormously popular song « Every race has a flag but the Coon », it later became a Black Nationalist symbol for the worldwide liberation of Black people, it was very popular during the Black liberation movement in the 60s.All colors on this flag have meanings:

the red is for the blood, which echo to the Blacks ancestors who were slaves

The black is for black people, it refers to their skin

The green for the abundant natural wealth of Africa.

In 1990, David fused the Unia flag with the American Flag because there were not racial harmony, and social equality in the US, David wanted to build a new flag on the image of black people in the US because the American flag didn’t refer to his people.

The flag, explains the duplicity that exists in being Black in America, and provides a sense of pride and show that Black people exist in the US and were excluded.

On this day, this new flag is the most significant piece done by David Hammons.It became a strong political statement for the Black community and raised racial awareness and the stereotypical problems in the USA
