Seats and forms of power

I’m going to talk about the notion of power. The power it's the capacity to exercise control or authority over others. It can be a person, a group, or a nation having great influence over people. Power can be expressed in different ways: it can be political, economic, social, military or intellectual, and depending on its type, the places where power is exercised change.

To discuss the notion of Seats and Forms of Power, I'm going to present the situation of Gun Control in the USA. Indeed, the influence of weapons in the USA plays a major part of the power, in the society.

What is the situation about gun control in USA ?

In a first part we will see why America allow guns but in a second part we’ll see that the debate about arms legislation is relaunched.

The USA are often called a gun nation for several reasons. The main reason is that in most States in America it's legal to own a firearm as a method of self defense as it is written in the Second Amendment to the US Constitution. The document “The Bill of Rights” quote the Second Amendment as “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed”. So it authorized all the USA’s citizens to own and bear an arm. The history of the country shows that the Americans have always felt the need to be armed, indeed firearms have been a big part of the American culture, it’s the heritage of the Wild West and many of West States would keep their guns rights. In the text “Gun laws in Colorado” it’s explained that everybody at least 18 years old is allow to carry firearm without a permit as long as it isn’t concealed. Also in this State, people don’t need to register their weapons.

The Constitution allow guns and many states are attached to carry one so associations have been created to fight people who want gun control. Indeed, the The National Rifle Association (NRA) and Gun Owners of America (GOA) are associations who protect gun owners and defend the rights to carry arms. There are more than 4 millions of members in the NRA and 1.5 millions in the GOA so these associations are very important and have weight against associations for gun control. This freedom about the carry of guns make debate between those who want gun control and those who don’t. That’s why, in the script of “Gun Owners of America”, Ted Nugent says that his association, the GOA, want to fight the haters of “We the people”, the haters of the freedom. He want to have freedom so have the right to bear an arm.

But the debate about the laws of the guns is relaunched because of the number of mass shootings and death per year in USA. Indeed we can see in the poster of the Brady Campaign, extract of the document with the same name, that in one year guns murdered 9,484 people. Also they are many mass shootings like the Texas First Baptist Church or the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The latter provoked a student march which its aim is to control guns and their laws. In the document “Thousands Walk Out of Class, Urging Action on Gun Control” we are informed that the governor of Florida has sign a bill to raised to 21 the minimum age to purchase a firearm and  extend the waiting period to 3 days. But on the national level, Donald Trump has abandoned gun control proposal. This march has been follow by many other students so many States want to make the laws stricter.
