Nelson Mandela was the best-known figure in south Africa, he was born Rolihlahla Dalibhunga Mandela, on July 18th 1918. It was his teacher who later gave him the English name nelson.

The Apartheid was established in 1948, because laws legally and physically separated different ethnic groups : the Afrikaners and the Africans.

In 1962, Mandela was arrested for plotting against the governement. He spent 27 years in prison. And in 1990, President F.W de Klerk announced the end of apartheid, after that Nelson Mandela was released from prison. And in 1993, Mandela and Klerk were jointly awarded the nobel peace price. In 1994, south Africa held its first elections in which all ethnic groups could vote. Nelson Mandela was elected president and in 1999, Mandela stepped down as president. And on december 5th 2010, Nelson Mandela died aged 95 in Johannesburg.

About Soweto; in 1976, more than 600 people was killed in clashes between black protesters and security force in soweto. Soweto means south Western Township, is one of the oldest and the best-known black residential district in South Africa. Soweto was created in 1930, because the black people who lived in Johannesburg were kicked-out. It was the result of racist apartheid laws. In soweto, there were no reads, electricity or running water at the time. Soweto was developed into a sprawling city now name to over 2 million people. In the 1960’s, the final stage of the apatheid resistance movement bagan. Today parts of soweto remain very poor, but it’s also home to well-known nobel prize-winning activists, soccer stars and musicians.
