Axe 5: fictions and realities

  • How is the legend of the dragon depicted in English literature?

Get ready!

Brainstorming about dragons:

  • Physical characteristics / description: dragons are dangerous, unfriendly, terrifying beast / creatures / monsters. They can fly and breathe fire. They have big yellow eyes. They are enormous / huge / gigantic and mighty / strong / powerful. They have horns, spikes, and scales.
  • Places: they live or can be seen in the mountains, castles, caves, forest…
  • People they interact with: other imaginary creatures (such as fairies, witches, wizards, elves, dwarfs, hobbits…), soldiers / fighters / dragons slayers (slay = kill), knights, princesses, villagers…
  • Personality: often aggressive, threatening, scary / terrifying / frightening, wild. They can be either intelligent, pet-like, friendly, affectionate, kind, loyal, faithful, OR evil (usually, they are the villains in stories).
  • Actions / missions: they can fly, they cause trouble, they can burn and destroy / decimate / annihilate / erase villages (they can set / put fire on villages). They also protect treasures (they are treasure keepers) or princesses.

Once upon a time, a man named George had a lot adventure = cross country with a horse

Came to small and met a man who live in a cave near the village

A terrible a dragon had come to the lake and attack the village every day.

Dragon took the food and still attack.

They give all the animals from their farm to the dragon. He continues to attack.

They give all the money, but he wasn’t satisfied.

An army wasn’t stronger to fight against him because they run away when they saw him.

The princess is the only way to calm the dragon.

The dragon was ready to eat her.

George killed very bravely the dragon and they come back and everyone applause them because they won’t have any problem now.

  • Greed = la cupidité, l’avarice, la gloutonnerie
  • To be greedy = être cupide, avare, glouton (Mr. Greedy)
  • To slay = to kill
  • A slayer = a killer
