P: Hello and welcome to this new episode of the “Daily planet”. The last 5 years, the number of unauthorized immigrants have considerably grown in the USA. Why? Because of the famous American dream.  In order to understand properly this notion, we decided to ask an immigrant himself. Please welcome Sofia Bermudez. She is 18 years old and is what we can call a “Dreamer”! Now, Sofia, could you first tell us where are you from?

P: And what pushed your parents to migrate?

S: [explain the badstuff happenin in Columbia]

Why did she decide to go to the Us ?

P: You mentioned the “American Dream”, could you give us your definition of this term?

In my native country, people used to say it meant having a much bigger spending power. You would be given many opportunities that would allow you to have much better living conditions. We thought about all the popular trending brands we couldn’t have in Columbia, such as Coca Cola, and dreamt about being able to afford it. I remember seeing a publicity of this soda where there was a wealthy family, with a big house, a big car and a dog. They looked so happy and they even had their own television!! That’s how I pictured the American dream. But then when we came, we realized this dream was hard to achieve and our first goal was to find financial stability.

P: Do you think that one day, you will reach this “American dream”?

S: Later I understood that this American family was very different from mine. My nationality made this perception of “dream” pretty much impossible to reach. But growing up, I realized this was not MY American dream. MY American dream is to do the best I can to become a surgeon, no matter how poor and how discriminated I am in this society.
