Idea of progress

I am going to talk about the notion of progress. First of all I would like to give a definition of the idea of progress and more precisly about the consumerism: baby boomers became adults, got married and had children. Women worked more and more and they started to earn money. Families decided to go and live in the suburbs and buy online. Today people are buying in supermarkets and online. Consumption has changed due to several factors.

I am going to use the document « Black Friday » and « Buy nothing day » and « Back to a cashless society » to study the changes in consumption habits since the birth of the consumer society, that can be considered as progress or not.

Why people habits are bad and how can they change their consuming habits?

The document « Black Friday » sells about the crazy day of the year in the United States when people rush to the stores, go to the sales and hunt for bargains. It describes what behaviour they have to have on this day: people become incredibly vicious, selfish, greedy and mean, they become crazy, this day is totally excessive. It shows that purchasing is our lifestyle, and it leads to overconsumption. The consumer society is materialistic and there are alternative like fair trade.

The document « Buy nothing day » shows a form of resistance with a campaign followed by more than 60 countries. It’s an anti-consumerism day. The goal is to simplify life, there are other things more enjoyable to do than consume compulsively and often make unnecessary purchases. Too many individuals create needs and are victims of consumer society, advertising and group pressure. Other values must be found because they are more important than having.

The document « Back to a cashless society » talks about the socializing and the environmental awarness. This is a lifestyle shared by like-minded folks. They borrow some things, they are bartering, or buying second-hand clothes. This is comforting for people who are sometimes alone thanks to websites that connect people who are interested in borrowing. This is collaborative consumption.

To conclude, i would like to say t it's very important to protect the society at the time of today, people have to change their mode of consumption because buying for buying is not a solution. If we so continue we shall not move forward to the progress, it is important to change our lifestyle to limit the excess consumption and avoid inflation for us and the generation to come. I think then that we must change all our habits and we remain reasonable.
