Today India is a fascinating country, full of  increadible richess. In the space of 40 years, India has become a major global player in the field of technology and services. It is one of the most dynamic economies of the world, but even if India as progress in many fields, they still remain inequalities, espacially between women and men.  Inequalities between men and women is a major problem which persist in India. Gender inequality is one of the most serious and ethical issues in India today. This is the, today, the subject that interest us.

Partie 1 : Women in the ancient India were treated with high respect and dignity.

In the Middle Ages, women had an equal statut with men but with the christian and muslim invasion, their statut begun to deteriorate.  The influences of the Muslim and christian laws in India caused a slow decline in the position of women in the Indian society. This many changes have caused serious problem for women, it completely changed the way women were accepted in the society. One of the main problem that still remains in India is Gendercide. Having a boy is synonym of hapiness in India’s families, boys must carry the family name, they are in charge to support and earn money for they families. Women on the other hand, are restricticted to basic task such as taking care of the children, cooking, cleaning…they do not have opportunities to go to school so they remain uneducated. The indian government tried to fix this problem by removing the dowry, but Indian population  still continues to perpetrate this tradition. In hospitals, many women ask to the doctors the sex of the baby, if it’s a girl a large majority of women decide to abort. This is, In india, sex selective abortions and finding out the sex of a baby before birth are illegal.

This terrible situation as well progress in those days. After India’s independence from the British rule, the position of the women in society started to change. Now, education in women has made women more independent and active. Today the majority of woman in India is legally supported and encouraged to participate in fields such as sports, politics,

media, education, science and technology. Women have held the highest positions, one the best exemple is Nehru’s daughter : Indira Gandhi was the first female prime minister, they was also Pratibha Patil, she became in 2007 the first female President of India.
