In today’s world, speaking a foreign language is a minimum if you want to work in a company. English, for example, is needed in every day’s tasks. The question is to know if all children should study a foreign language at school, starting in the earliest grades?

On the first hand, studying a foreign language when you are a kid may not be a good idea. In fact, many children because of starting learning a new language to early have problems with their native language. Moreover, they are not able to make the difference between French and German for example and it may be a trouble for their studies. To give an example, I know a little girl, aged of 7, from a babysitting who has lived with her parents in Zurich. When we discuss, many times when she is saying a sentence with words in French and in German. Everything to say that learning a foreign language too may cause difficulties to a child.

On the other hand, studying a foreign language may be a huge asset for a child. When you are a child, you learn easier than when you are an adult. In fact, you are more able to learn new expressions and have a good pronunciation. Moreover, when you are a young pupil, you are more open minded to learn a new language and you don’t ask yourself if it is important or not, you do what people tell you. I have a little niece, who speaks fluently English, German and French because her parents took a German babysitter and usually spoke to her in English. Today, she is able to speak in those tree languages and it helps her in her every day’s life. It will also be a huge asset when she will have to look for job.

To conclude, we can say that learning a foreign language in the earliest grades may be difficult at the beginning for the child but at the end it’s a real asset.
