In 2019, 200 000 students went to Canada to study abroad. But is it really worth it to leave your country and leave your home for your studies. Each year this theme is a real debate in every family. So in this argumentation, I’m going to give pros and cons on this subject, should you do it or not ? First of all I’m going to talk about the pros: the improvement in your language skills and the discovery of new cultures. And then i’m going to quote the cons of the experience like homesickness and the culture shock.

Firstly, the first argument in favor of studying abroad is to improve your language skills. If you want to learn or improve your knowledge of a language, going to a foreign country is perfect for you because you live like the people in the country and acquire idiomatic expressions of the national language. For example if you go to America and you are French then you will live like an American, eat like an American and after some time think like an American and as a result improve your language knowledge.

Secondly, being alone in a foreign country will push you to discover the world, a different way of thinking and make comparisons with your own country. You will move to somewhere where you know no one and nothing (or not so much), so you will make your own experience. For instance, visiting Berlin in Germany, helps you to improve your culture and understand the history of the country and of Europe after World War II.

On the other hand, being in a foreign country discovering a new culture might cause a culture shock. It means that you can have a disorientation when you are suddenly living with unfamiliar culture, in fact when you’re abroad you live and eat differently. To illustrate what I just said, I’m going to take the example of china. The jet lag can be a drawback (+8 hours), or the different food can be inappropriate.

Furthermore you can have homesickness. Being far from your friends and family could have an impact on your studies, you could be obsessed by the fact that if something would happen to you, you couldn’t rely on anyone close to you. For example if you have a severe accident your family couldn’t be with you before some time(hours or maybe days).
