The Da Vinci system is a medical robot and more precisely a machine controlled by a surgeon for realising operation at the abdomen for example. It’s a system developed by the company “instrument surgical”.

The Da Vinci is composed of two parts: the first one is an ergonomic console which permits the surgeon to see with two screens, the view in 3 dimensions of the operation. There are also 2 joysticks for controlling the surgical instrument.

The second part is situating above the patient and composed of four arms completely robotised and interactives. One is holding a camera and the others different surgical instrument like the scalpel.

In 2001, this system was used for the first time in Paris at the hospital Henri-Mondo for an operation of prostatectomy. It means the ablation of the prostate.

In April 2011, 1750 copy was in service all around the world. It is used for different type of operation: an operation of the cancer of the tongue or also a laryngectomy.

This system has several advantages:

  • Several arms
  • More precision
  • Visualisation in 3D
  • Better comfort

This system is a big advance for the future of medicine but it’s not accessible for everyone. In fact, this system cost 2 million and 120 000 euros per year to do the maintenance of the system. The operations are longer with this system than them without. And there is no tactile sensation. The company is trying to increase this fact.

This revolutionary system which help the surgeon inn his operation but it is much controverted because there is more medical error than the average.
