1)Definition of for terms economy, economics, economic, economical

Two adjectives and two nouns:

  • Economical=adjective use to describe something, not using a lot of fuel, money…

Ex : a car can be economical, there is increasing demand for cars that are more economical on fuel.

Ex2 : What’s the most economical way of heating this building ? what’s the way to spent less money.

  • Economic= means that something is related to trade, industry and money.

Ex : the economic situation of a country.

Ex2 : the country is in a very poor economic state.

Ex3 : we should not expand our business in the current economic state.

2)Focus on economy

Economical and Economic in French is the same word =économique

Economical=économique par rapport au cout

Economic→industries etc…

De meme “economy” “economics” meme en francais

  • Economy= comes from the old Greek “oikonomia” household (foyer) management.

Archaic English (old English) economy= the management household and especially expenses.

Today→ economy is the system by which goods and services are produced, sold, and bought in a country or region. → not households but regional level

Other def→ it’s a network of producers, distributers and consumers in a local, regional, national or international community.

3)Economics

  • Economics= « l’économie » in French= the study of the economy and the factors affecting the economyin fact it’s a social science that deals with production, distribution but also consumption of goods and services. the social science that deals with the economy.

Ex : study of economics not economy.

Pb of balance because on one side you have unlimited wants, people wants everything and on the other side you have limited resources from a financial point of view but also a material level.

When u study economics it’s important to study how resources can be best distributed in order to correspond to the needs and wants of the largest number of people.

3a)The scarcity principle

Scarcity comes from the adjective scarce= rareté ou manque

Scarcity=something that is unavoidable(=inevitable) because typically our wants exceed the meants available to satisfy them, in fact even if our wants are unlimited (boundless) the resources available to satisfy our wants are limited there’s a gap.

Scarcity is the reason why the economics exist, because economics studies the gap between limited resources and unlimited wants.

Scarcity of resources of time of information, human beings would like for nothingles êtres humains ne manqueraient de rien.

But everything is limited ex : scarcity of time u wake up and u have lots of projects u won’t be able to do everything not enough time u have many wants but time is limited

Scarcity of resources: u can’t buy everything u don’t have enough many.

Scarcity of info: all the questions for the exams but teacher won’t give them.

Because u can’t have everything u have to do choices ex : of fashion victim.

Hard choices about what to produce and what to consume.

Economics= obj is to study how people make choices under conditions of scarcity+ the results of those choices for society.

In fact every government decision, every business decision and a lot of personal decisions equate (be the equivalence of) to deciding how to get the most out of unlimited resources.

Ex : u don’t have enough money to buy jean and t-shirt at the same time, at sale prices will decrease so in January u will be able, so one of your decision can be to wait.
