  1. Before your start this assignment, make sure you have completed the Introduction and Unit 1 of your course.
  2. The first part of this assignment will evaluate your understanding of a written text in English and your capacity to use, in a composition, basic punctuation and the grammar principles and vocabulary that you have studied so far.
  3. The second part of this assignment will evaluate your pronunciation as you read an English text, your ability to converse with an Anglophone about the subjects that you have studied so far in Unit 1, and your understanding of the main ideas in a simple description that you will hear.
  4. The second part will be done in a telephone conversation with your tutor. This requires you to prepare the Listening and Speaking sections and then to schedule an appointment with your tutor.
  5. Both sections of the assignment need to be completed before returning it to the course website for correction.

Writing

There are two parts to this writing assignment. The first part evaluates your writing skills and the second part evaluates your use of revision strategies. Apply the vocabulary and the rules of grammar and usage you learned in Unit 1.

Question 5        [   /30 points]

Write and revise a 100–150-word composition on this subject: "Describe someone you personally know well.” More specifically, describe what your relationship to this person is. Talk about any nicknames this person has, describe what this person looks like, and talk about why you find this person interesting. To help you revise your composition, you are asked to use the Revision Checklist available as an attachment in this assignment.

Make sure to use a minimum of five words from the vocabulary that we practised in Unit 1 relating to names, family, describing people, and cultural identity. Also, make sure to apply the grammar notions seen in this unit: punctuation, capitalization, singular and plural nouns and pronoun forms, and possessive adjectives.

IMPORTANT: If you do not write a minimum of 100 words, your tutor will reduce your final mark for the written assignment by 50%. Your tutor will not count mistakes beyond the 150-word point.

Good luck!

Write your text in the space below.

Indicate the number of words in the space provided.   110

Revising

When you have finished writing and revising, write a short paragraph on your use of revision strategies. More specifically, reread your text and identify two strategies you used to help you write and two examples to show how you used them. Second, reflect on how using these revision strategies helped you improve your text. To help you do this and to get more information on the subject, refer to Appendix: Text Revision Strategies in the Course Resources section on the course website.

Remember to use an English and a French-English dictionary.

When your corrected composition is returned to you, analyze and correct your errors carefully, using the Marking Guide found in this assignment.

Evaluation Grid – Writing

You will be evaluated in two steps. Your tutor will first correct the composition using the correction codes. Your tutor will then evaluate your composition using the marking scheme.

IMPORTANT: If you do not write a minimum of 100 words, your tutor will reduce your final mark for the written assignment by 50%. Your tutor will not count mistakes beyond the 150-word point.
