ALASKA

Hi guys, I’m Brandy. I come from Alaska and I would like to present my state.

THE STATE

This is the biggest state of USA but it is one of the least populated.  As you can see, it is on the north-west and it hasn’t frontier with our country but with Canada. Its capital is Juneau and Its nickname are “The Last Frontier” or “The Land of the Midnight Sun”.

This is the flag of Alaska. Furthermore, each state of America has a seal, and this is the one of Alaska. We can see mountains, lake, land etc… They are emblems of Alaska!

And finally, I am proud to tell you that our motto is “North to the Future”.

There is a polar climate: winter is very cold and long. The soil is frozen and prevents the development of agriculture. During the spring, the soil thaws on the surface and causes swamp formation.

This is a typical fauna of cold environment. The fauna and flora are protected by National Parks and Nature Reserves. There are 8 major National Parks. The state’s iconic animals for photographic or hunting are called “Big Five”. This category includes grizzly bear, caribou, moose, wolf and Dall’s sheep.

The population of Alaska are called the inuits.

THE INUITS

The Inuit people, the most dispersed people on earth, live in a territory that extends over 5000 km, from Alaska to Siberia, that is, all around the Arctic Circle. Therefore, they have adapted their way of life to the polar climate.

Despite the dispersion of their habitat, these people have similar customs everywhere. The notion of family has gained so much influence among this people that all their society is organized around it. Men hunt, fish, build houses, and women cook, prepare animal skins and make clothes from the leather the hunters bring back.

The food mainly consists of fish, seals and whales whose flesh is cooked, dried or frozen. The seal also provides them with leather, oil for heating or lighting and tents.

Inuit have two types of homes: in summer, they build sealskin tents and in winter, the huts provide additional protection from the cold. To get around, they traditionally use kayaks, umiaks or dog sleds.

Their traditions: Songs and dances are the essential part of their performances, which they accompany with their favourite musical instrument, the drum of the shamans, a kind of tambourine.

Their craft, known since prehistoric times, offers decorated tools, ivory figurines, whale bone or wooden masks.

However, since the second half of the 20th century they gradually have been forced to adapt to the modern world. Increasingly, Inuit are moving to urban areas in modern housing, buying food in shops and using motorboats and snowmobiles.

CONCLUSION

Thank you, I was proud to introduce you to my state. Indeed, we can often forget it as a civilized state because of the wilderness of its wonderful landscapes.
