Dear Emily

It’s been to long since I wrote your name. I faced serious issues to send this letter, the mail system is not as well-developed as the English one. I apologise for my delay, I deeply hope you didn’t worry to much. Every day, I think of you and the baby. My mind can’t focus on something else. Knowing you are not on your own reassures me. It was a good idea to move on my mother’s flat. I am sure she treats you well. I heard on the radio, the weather is not clever in London. If you are cold or need anything else don’t hesitate to ask my mother, she always wants to help. Hope to read your news soon.

Since I left, life has lost its beauty. The routine I was complaining about was not that bad finally. It’s all been one thing after another, it’s impossible for me to step back at this moment. The boat crossing was a serious adventure. I felt sick all along, one more waves and I would have thrown up. Afterwards a lengthy journey, I arrived at Ellis Island. I have heard people complaining about how they were treated there, yet it was like a stroll for me. Behind the sea, I had a first glimpse of New York. Although it can be hard to believe, buildings were like touching the sky. I am sure you can catch clouds on the top floor. Nevertheless, my admiration changed as soon as I entered the city. Streets are overcrowded by people yelling as they were deaf, and there is grime everywhere. Luckily, the estate agent don’t take me for a ride. The apartment is perfect, enough space and stunning decoration.

My struggle is about my job. I knew settling a shop in New York is a risk but nothing could have prepared me for this turn of events. The day I went to recover the keys, the owner had a dejected look on his face. He told me: “The shop caught fire last week”. It takes me a moment to realise what was happening. My dreams collapsed but every cloud have a silver line. In my misfortune, I met Johnson, a wealthy man from the city who needed a sales assistant for his brand-new shop. After some discussion, he offered me the job and I accepted immediately. I start tomorrow, pretty nervous but it’s my job. Life has his own meaning, maybe I was not destined to be a tie-seller but a luxury clothing salesman.

Everything is fine now, there is nothing to worry about.

Take care, and I will see you as soon as I can.
