Many years ago, a technology used to rule our homes : DVDs… Today, there’s only a few people that still use them.
But some people might ask themselves how a DVD works, because it’s just a little piece of plastic and it can project an hour long film with a really good quality of sound and image. So to be quick, the innerface of DVD’s is seared with hits micrometew long wick are arranged in a continious spiral, and represent recorded data. The laser light in the DVD player is focused on these pits, then datas are read by picking up the reflected light.
How did people use it in the past?
They could rent DVDs in shops or buy them if they wanted.
Then, they went home to see it on their old big TVS. To do so, they had to put the DVD inside a DVD player and let the movie appear on their screen. Then they just sat down (or maybe stood up, it depends), installed themselves in a comfortable position, maybe on a sofa, and enjoyed the movie.
They could watch it alone or with friends. It’s a highly versatile technology.
After watching the movie, if they had rented it, they just went back to the store to return it (unless they’re criminals) and, if they had bought it, they kept it and stored it beside all the other movies they have seen.
Then, until they die, they could watch it again and again whenever they wanted, repeating the process described earlier.
Is it better than modern technology in some way?
Nowadays, there are three main legal ways to watch a movie or a series. Firstly, you can go to the cinema and watch the movies that just came out but it’s very ephemeral because you cannot enjoy it twice unless you’re willing to pay another 10 euros and go see it again. It’s also usually far from your home so you have to drive there or take the bus. It’s a lot of investment to “just” watch a movie.
Secondly, you can watch them on platforms like Netflix or Disney+. Unfortunately, these platforms have recently added advertisements while watching your favorite movie or TV show. Just like YouTube in fact, except YouTube is actually for free! Plus, the movies or shows on the platforms can go away at all times if the contract between the platform and the film’s producing company reaches its end. Finally, you also need WiFi in order to watch them.
The last way is to own DVD’s. They allow you to watch all the movies or TV shows you like at home, without any WiFi and advertisements. Also, the movies belong to you because they cannot go away if a contract reaches its end. If you own the DVD, you “own” the movie. The quality is also pretty good, depending on the DVD player you have, but they usually are. If the quality doesn’t satisfy you, there are Blu-Rays with higher sound and visual quality, just like on platforms. All the issues that come with platforms and theaters are not a problem anymore with DVD’s, and we truly think this technology should come back.

But let’s not only compare a DVD to its alternatives, and think a little bit about what it actually is on itself. When you think about a DVD, you
