  1. DEFINITION OF CULTURE AND TRADITION

  • Culture

The  culture is, according to the sociologist from Quebec Guy Rocher, "a set bound of ways of thinking, to smell and to act more or less formalized which, being learnt and shared by a plurality of people, serve, in a way at the same time objective and symbolic, to establish these people in a particular and different community." (Guy Rocher, on 1969, 88). Set of the material or  immaterial productions acquired in company.

  • Tradition

Tradition means the continuous transmission of cultural content through history from a founding event or an immemorial past (from the Latin traditio, tradere, trans "through" and dare "to give", "get to another, reset "). This intangible heritage may be the vector of identity of a human community. In an absolute sense, tradition is a memory and a project in a word, a collective consciousness: the memory of what was, with the duty to pass it and enrich it. With the indefinite article, a tradition may designate a religious movement which animates it, or more commonly, a particular symbolic practice, as the popular traditions. In everyday language, the word tradition is sometimes used to describe a use or a habit, consecrated by an extended practice within a social group even restricted (eg a family tradition). The concept of tradition has a different meaning in the word traditionalism, which represents a desire to return to traditional values, not transmitting a legacy through historical evolution. Traditionalism is the opposite of progressivism. It is therefore not a concept directly related to the first definition of tradition.

  1. ABOUT  CUTURE IN THE  BENIN

  1. Description de la culture Béninoise

The rich cultural diversity of the people of Benin is one of the most interesting attractions of this country. The population is composed of over twenty different socio-cultural groups, each with its history, language and traditions. What remains constant among all the people of Benin, is the friendship and hospitality. The opening and remarkable warmth with which the people welcome strangers and engage them in conversation allow visitors to discover the Beninese culture on a personal level. In the South, the most important socio-cultural groups are the Fon and Yoruba. The Fon language is the predominant local language in most of the region, although there are many other variations. The Goun, the Tory, the Ayizo the Seto example, are closely related to Fon. The Adja people are another group closely linked to Fons. They are concentrated in the southwest, near the city of Abomey. Historically, the Fon were one of the most powerful civilizations of West Africa. These are the Fon who founded the kingdom of Dahomey, which dominated much of the history of Benin today before French colonization. In the north, the most important cultural groups are Bariba, Dendi and Betamaribé or "Somba". Bariba are from the northern part of Nigeria and are mainly concentrated in the Northeast region of Benin, around the city of Nikki. The largest and most notable Bariba event is the annual celebration of theGani celebrated Nikki.Dendi are mainly concentrated in the northwest of Benin, between Parakou and Natitingou. It is estimated to have migrated from the ancient empire of Mali before settling in Benin. The Fulani (or Peul) are found throughout northern Benin. They are often found during the dry season when they move their livestock in search of water. The last group in the North is the Betamaribé group or "Somba" are concentrated in the mountains of Atacora, north-western Benin. This group is particularly known for its unique architectural style, "the Sombatatas" like small castles. In Benin, people attach great importance to spirituality and religious practice, whether traditional or modern, is an important part of everyday life. The Benin is considered the birthplace of voodoo and over 80% of Benin's population practice this religion that some traditional call also Animism. In addition to Animism, modern religions such as Christianity (Catholics, Protestants, Evangelicals) and Islam have a growing presence in Benin.
