Carl Friedrich Gauss

Carl Friedrich Gauss was born in the 18th century in Germany. Unlike his parents, he was very well educated, as he learned to read and write before entering school without any help from his parents. He became one of the most renowned mathematicians that ever lived. (Scott & Rice 2005)

The fundamental theorem of algebra was partially proved by Gauss as he gave proof. This explains that every polynomial has a root of the form  a+bi.  In the early 19th century, he proved the fundamental theorem of arithmetic, which consists of proof that every natural number can be represented as the product of primes. (Weisstein 2007)

Gauss’ most outstanding mathematical achievement has to be “Disquisitiones Arithmeticae”, which is his study of number theory, or properties of integers. In this study, Gauss proved that every numeral figure is the sum of maximum three triangular numbers. In the same study, he also progressed the algebra of congruences. That same year, Gauss progressed the method of least square fitting, which allowed him to revolutionarily calculate the orbit of the asteroid. (Weisstein 2007)

Many theories and methods were strongly developed by Gauss in his lifetime. Although he does not always get the credit he deserves, due to people recreating his works, he is still remembered as one of the greatest mathematicians of all time.
