The food industry needs some innovations : produce more whilst spending less on manufacturing cost. That's a common field of study amongst several societies, of which one is located in Nebraska. What really is the fate of cattles ? Pigs, cows, lambs...they are all concerned with the changes in the way they are bred. In fact, they have been subjects of several experiments in order to increase yield.

All these attempts to increase meat production have resulted in complete failure, causing their death since after being experimented these animals become fragile, starving and even devoured by coyotes as they have no where to seek shelter. Some of them are even crushed to death by their own mother due to lack of space. The agency which allow these experiments is the « US... » claiming it is in the advantage of the breeders by helping them make better profits even though humans have the tendency to resign themselves of a diet based on poultry and fish. Fifty years back, this same agency was working on meat quality (chewing capacity and fat percentage) and was fighting against diseases and was helping breeders bring their business on a global scale. However, studies conducted by New York Times showed that this business was way too expensive, and thus they moved to experiments on livestock as stated above.

Yet today veterinarians are shocked by the condition of animals : the result of animal loss is massive (for instance several deaths caused by diseases as well as coyotes' attacks). The general population has also had an awareness and wants to buy meat produced humanely. Some researchers had since directed their works towards the well being of animals at low cost. But these were soon abandoned, especially because the assessment of pain felt by animals is too vague.

However, many historical events proved animals' sufferings.

-The mad cow in the 2000s : a disease coming from cattle. It originated in the food given to cattles which consisted uneaten portions of beefs' and dead animals' carcasses. It then brought awareness to consumers about some common illegal practices in livestock, such as the use of animal-based food fed to cattles. Moreover, these ill practices have not only harmed the cattles' health but human's health as well.

This awareness however did not prove to be enough : even if the quality , sanitary and veterinary controls have intensified, man still found a way to slip through the net and bypass the system. Thus in 2013, he managed to find the right idea to increase his profits by mixing horse meat in dishes that was supposed to consist of beef only. A new scandal...new awareness among people...consumers tend to become more and more....vegetarians.

Should we really get to such an extent to be able to eat properly ?

The conduct of man inexorably brings him back to the quest for profit. Not only does he mistreat animals, he spreads diseases among them and yet still has the courage to lie to the general public about what they are eating...
