Studies Turned Into a Hobby

Nowadays, many college students perceive the image of a being a good student wrongly. They think showing up to classes, reading the textbooks, and taking notes will have them acquire the status of good students. However, learning involves a complex set of skills. Like other activities, it requires practice in order to succeed. This report examines the study habits of college students. A study was conducted, and research was conducted on the relationships between gender, study environments, and weekly study hours.

The key to effective studying is not a constant number hours of studying. It is studying smarter. In this survey, five students of each sex were questioned. All five girls were using what we call note taking. As for the guys, only two out of five did some note taking. According to an article written by Dr. Moses C. Ossai, “The age factor seems to have been a more predictable determinant of study habits.” The research conducted showed students whose ages were above 23 were in a deeper level of study habits than younger students. The younger students indicated lower academic performance. Nonetheless, these studies proved that female students are better in organization, time scheduling, note taking, and concentration. Note taking is one of the activities that are useful in learning and academic success. It explains why female students are academically better. Overall, female students proved to have better study habits than the male students.

A place with many distractions is not a useful area to study. Perhaps a library or a quiet coffee house can be good places to check out. Some students prefer studying in their rooms; some might like it lesser. In fact, being organized means having all their materials close by, which reduces distractions by the more fun things around them such as computers, televisions, etc. Six out of 10 people stated that studying in their room alone was more efficient. The remaining number said that studying with someone was not profitable, especially someone who is not studying in the same field. Quiet environments reduce distraction by stimulating concentration. A distraction-free zone creates a more efficient work environment. Having access to other devices shifts attention from our homework to some other sources of information. It affects the quality of the work done.

We spend hours weekly on our projects and classes. How enough is the minimum? One half of the responders claimed to study an average of more than 20 hours weekly. The other half claimed to study less than 20 hours. As we all know, the minimum requirements of each class for every credit hour is two to three hours weekly. Weekly, a full-time student should spend between 24 and 36 hours studying and filling assignments. It can go up to 45 hours of studying outside of the classroom. It all comes back to how we organize our schedule. It is a significant commitment with all the sacrifices we have to make to devote ourselves to studying. This survey was conducted to determine the number of hours that have to be spent weekly in order to be a good student.

In conclusion, the paucity of proper study habits can cause lower academic performance. Successful students have better study habits. They develop certain skills like note taking and time scheduling
