In the first place, a successful diplomat must have a passion for the art and craft of diplomacy and international relations. And although it does not provide exact policy prescriptions in present circumstances, studying history does illuminate choices and raise many questions of policy formulation.

   Also, experience is a crucial component of success that is why, a smart diplomat should not hesitate to dedicate a part of his time and energy in professional development by reading and practicing. Thanks to the experience component, a diplomat will be able to exploit opportunities at the right time.

   Language skills are equally important, an ideal diplomat needs to speak and write his own language correctly, in like manner if it is not his mother tonge language, English is also a must, as it is considered to be the current international diplomatic language. In the same context, a diplomat has to write well and quickly, speak fluently and concisely.

   Analytical temperament is another key point in diplomat's job in order to ensure meticulous attention to detail.

   In addition, he/she needs to be a tough and effective negotiator and to build a long-term physical and mental stamina.

   Taking responsibilities is also an essential skill for a successful diplomat, in particular, accepting dangerous assignments and never disavowing the decisions of his/her official superiors.
