Is progress always positive ?

The Idea of Progress is the theory that the different advances in technology, science, and social organization can produce an improvement in the human condition. That is, people can become happier in terms of quality of life (social progress) through economic development (modernization), and the application of science and technology (scientific progress). Progress implies change and evolution and throughout history most of the advances have been positive. When we define the « idea of progress » we usually say that progress is positive: medical progress, social progress, technological progress …all have contributed to our modern-day world being a better place. But how does thees technological progress change our lives, is it really a positive change or are we becoming too dependent on new technologies? We will try to answer to this question dinstinging what is positive and what is negative in the evolution of a society.

First of all, I think progress is essential to evolve. History is made of progress and evolution that have allowed the world to be what it’s today. To start We HAVE to talk about scientific progress. The scientific progress include major steps forward in domains such as the astronomy , the physics or the biology. They allow us to understand better the world in which we live , or to fight againt diseases. In 1628, The English doctor William Harvey publishes a book explaining the laws of the blood circulation. In 1766, The physicist and the British chemist Henry Cavendish establish the existence of the hydrogen. There is like that , many discoveries scientist which have allowed the development of our society in particular in medicine , which is an important domain becose thank's to that we save many lives. Furthermore, For example, in an article of the Time, « My body, my laboratory », a wheeled doctor explained how he managed to connect his wheelchair to his brain in order to control it. Scientif progress allow's devlopment of our societies.

Besides , we have to talk about technological progress.Of course,Wonderful inventions are due to advances such as the internet or the development of robots like the japan robot which look like a woman and which is able to reflect and make some move like humans.Furthermore, we can't talk about technology without talking about Steeve Jobs. We study in class thank's to his speech how Steeve Jobs had an impact on our society. His creation is a bomb in our society: I phone , I pad I pod it's a wonderfull world we enjoy ...But technology can be dangerous if not controlled or used for bad. Children today spend on average of 6 hours each day in front of the computer and TV, but less than 4 minutes a day in untructed outdoor play. So Technology has a bad impact on our society too, so we have to use it carefully.

Finally , there is also social progress. For example With the fight for the women's righhts , a fight for equality / and espacially with the fight against racism. . Rosa Louise MacCauley Parks was an African-American civil rights activist.Rosa was arrested in 1955 , for not giving up her seat for a white person on the bus. She stood up against racism. She never gave up , She went to jail, but kept fighting for rights, She was courageous, She was brave. Not afraid to stand up for what she thought was right. This is an example of social progress.
