The concept of space and exchange refers to the geographic areas that the people reside and interactions between men that exist. The great evacuation of 1939, perfectly illustrates this concept. The propaganda posters, photos of evacuees, the testimony of Nina and Sheelagh, the extract which tells the separation of Anna and her mother, the explanation of what the asociation of ERA, and finally 'foot the explanation of pied piper operation by Devid Prest reflectet that. But how can we relate te topic « the Great Evacuation » and the notion « Spaces and exchanges » ? And how was it conducted and what were the consequences of the exchanges of spaces of the Great evacuation?

In the first part we will see what the great evacuation, what does it consist of and when it has occurred; in the second part the participation of the state to evacuate the population; and finally in the third part we will see the impact that this event had on the evacuees through testimonies, and the association set up to preserve in the memory of future generations this event.

First of all the code name of the great evacuation was Pied Piper. The pied piper is the subject of a legend concerning the departure or death of a great number of children from the town of Hamelin. It happened in first september 1939 = thousand nine hundred thirty nine, in Great Britain. The government decided to evacuate a part of population from London because they know that Nazis would bomb the city. Indeed, 40 : forty thousand civiliants were killed, and 1 million houses were destroyed. Only children disappled persons, pregnant women, teachers, helpers and babies with their mothers were evacuated. In all 3.5 million people were evacuated, whose 2 million privately; and 1 thousand 5 hundred by the state. They were evacuated by the train to the seaside or the countryside and hosted by families. However the evacuation wasn’t compulsory so a lot of parents were reluctant to evacuate their children. Parents were reluctant to have their children evacuated because they didn’t want to be separated from their children. What’s more, parents didn’t know where their children be sent and who will host. Finally the government also didn’t know the places where the children would be evacuated; they just knew the area so the parents couldn’t make a fuss. What’s more they didn’t know that London would be really bombed.

Propaganda posters were therefore created by the government to encourage people evacuate their children. The first propaganda poster we saw in class is a poster who show a little girl and her elder brother. They both look scared. They are in the underground, in a cellar. The scene takes place during an air-raid, and bombs are falling. These propaganda poster target mothers. The goal of this picture is to urge mothers to let their children be evacuated. The startegy is that mothers are made to feel guilty. It is selfish of them to keep their children with them. The second propaganda poster show a boy hugging his little sister. There have been evacuated. They are evacuees. They look happy, healthy and safe. The purpose is to deter parents from taking their children back to London to the city. In the third propaganda poster, the target are mothers. The strategy is that mothers who take their kids back to the city are considered as traiters. Next we saw pictures of evacuees. In the first picture
