JAWS
I'm going to speak about the novel Jews . Jews was written by Peter Benchley in 1974 & adapted for film by Steven Spielberg one years after .
Jaws is a short title , easy to remember , eyes-catching , attractive .
This title makes us want to know more about this story .
So Jaws is a story who take place in California , overall it's a story about a shark who attack bathers in the sea .
First para has a lot of details description . It's very interesting because this para give 2 points of views. One the one hand the shark is presented as a animal which is not so dangerous (for example he is compared to a bird & he is named the great fish). We have the feeling that the shark is vulnerable . In fact the writer take the shark defense. On the other hand the writer remind us that the shark is not this little bird but rather a predator bloot-thirsty .
He has no brain , he his only a killing machine .
These 2 pov create a puzzling atmosphere , the reader feel ill at ease.
The snd para describe the shore and more precisely a couple .
We learn that the scene take place at night even if in the first para it was heard in . This couple seems to be oblivious to the danger , they are carefree .
The man is drunk, he will be unable to save the woman if she drowns.
It does not seem to be a problem for the woman who will nevertheless go in the water , it shows perfectly the reckless of these characters .
The narrator is omniscient , we know more than the main character , it's the dramatic irony .
It is made plain clear that they would be killed by the shark but when ?
We read that they run to the beach , as if they were in a hurry to "die "to satisfy unconsciously the shark's hunger.
(=>para quand elle va dans l'eau )
The suspense is maintained thanks to some passages like when she enters in the water , it's like a ritual , all her gestures ara analysed "lire le passage".
She is trespassing the shark's element , the wave feel like danger , it is as if the sea wanted to prevent to move forward .
Again the dramatic irony is present because now the shark is able to localized the woman . The shark acts like a ritual too , it works on instinct , that show again the predator side of the shark , he has no brain he is just blood-thirsty.
Even now, the woman is unaware of the danger she take .
It's only at the end of the text that she finally realizes that something happens ,"for the first time , she felt fear"
She at least gradually realized what's going on . She recognized .. as if before that she was sort of hypnotized ..
The attack is very quick , as the paragraph , the description doesn't deal a lot of details ; there is almost no feeling ...
