• Can India of today being considered as a modern country?

India is a country of diversity. Diversity in landscapes, geography, peoples, languages, customs and religions. I will explain why India can be regarded as a modern country, through the social aspect and the political aspect. India has an eventful story, which is very interesting to study.

India is a fast changing country, because of globalization in emerging countries. Manners and customs are changing. Indeed, Arnand Giridharadas, an American journalist, who has Indians origins, has written an article in the New York Times. This article was dealing with the changes in India. He said that between the day his parents have left India and between the day he went back there, the country had so much changed that he was surprised. For example, Indians have developed an individual identity because of the apparition of the new technologies and smart phones.

(Another girl)

India is a fast growing country, but there are a lot of social problems due to the ancient traditions and to the increasing of social inequalities. For example, I have read an extract of the book “Secret Daughter” by Shilpi Somaya Gowda. This extract was dealing with the birth of the second child of Kavita, the main female character of the book. She was waiting for her second child. Her first child was a girl that her husband, Jasu, has abandoned or killed, it is not mentioned in the extract. He wants to abandon the new born because it is a girl, and when she will get married, her parents will have to pay a dowry to her husband’s family. A dowry is a sum of money or a property brought by a bride or her family to her husband or his family. But the problem is that Jasu and Kavita are very poor people, so this is very difficult or impossible for them to pay the dowry. This is better for poor peoples in India, because they receive money or presents and they don’t have to give anything. If the family of the bride doesn’t pay the dowry, the bride can be tortured or killed by the husband’s family. The dowry tradition is still rooted in people’s mind in 2014, and in spite of all the laws that prohibit this tradition, poor people still use this tradition to receive a bit of money or a present.

Nowadays, there are too many problems of socials inequalities in India, such as the corruption. Indeed, the corruption is one of the biggest problems of the Indian society is the corruption. Indeed, the politic class is concerned with a lot of scandals. It is not unusual to learn that local politicians use henchmen to ensure the continued existence of their local power. But the corruption exists also with national politicians. Indeed, I have learned that in December 2008, 120 of India's 523 parliament members were accused of crimes. It is shameful, because a politician have to be an example for the entire society. In 2005, India has signed the the United Nations Convention against Corruption. This convention aims at find and punishes corruption in any field, not only in politic, and all around the world.
