The midterm elections are one of the key events in American political life. They are held in the middle of the American president's four-year term. Their purpose is to renew the seats of the American Congress. This year is the 118th time. Among them, all 435 seats of the House of Representatives will be renewed, whereas only one-third of the seats of the Senate will be renewed. This is due to the fact that the Senate renewals by third every two years. Americans also use these elections to vote for their state governor, in 34 of the 50 states.

History:

Promulgated in 1787, the United States Constitution is the foundation of American politics.  In Article II, Section 2, Clause I, it states that the term of office for members of the House of Representatives is two years. Thus, indirectly, the mid-term elections were created. Therefore, the first mid-term elections have been held while the sitting president was George Washington.

Past results:

Since 1860 and the establishment of the two-party system with the Democratic and Republican parties, 37 of the 41 midterms have resulted in the President's party losing the House of Representatives. This situation often takes place because the president's voters are less solicited, while dissatisfied voters see it as an opportunity to contest the policy in power.

These elections are also very important for the president because it allows him to know if he will be able to continue following the presidential program that he used 2 years ago. So, this year's elections will determine different decisions, especially regarding the war in Ukraine, but also regarding the current economic crisis.
