The Boston tea party arose from two issues confronting the British Empire in 1765 :

The first is an ongoing dispute about the extent of parliament's authority and the second is financial problems of the british east india company

Indeed, since the enactment of the townshend acts of 1767, Britain could tax its thirteen american colonies.

This decision was not well received by the colonists because they were not represented at westminster and heard uphold the principle that an area not represented could not be taxed.

At the same time, the British Kingdom was then faced with heavy cash flow problems and king george 3 decided to significatly increase buisness taxes against the colonies. Tea, one of the products which the tax was the most important, had become a symbolic point of contention.

As a result of the tea tax, the colonies refused to buy the british tea.

Instead, they smuggled tea from holland.

This left the british india company with warehouses full of unsold tea, and the company was in danger of going out of buisness.

The government was going to force the colonists to buy their tea

In may 1773, the parliament and the prime minister passed the tea act.

The tea act allowed the company to sell tea to the colonies without paying taxes. This allowed the company to sell their tea cheaper than colonial merchants and smuggled tea.

It caused the ruin of independent merchants

The governor of massachusetts demanded tht the tea be unloaded and that people pay the taxes and duty on tea but the population declined.

In october 1773, six ships carrying east india company tea were sent to the colonies; one in new york, one in charleston, one in philadeelphia and three in boston.

The settlers prevented the cargo to be unloaded and the boats had to go back to britain with all their tea except ships anchored in boston.

In December 16, sixty bostonians named Son of Liberty climbed aboard the ships ( the eleanor, the darthmouth and the beaver) disguised as mohawk tribe because it caused fear at this time.

Sliently, between 6 and 7 pm, they opened and threw 342 vhests of tea overboard.

This event provoked many reactions from famous peoples. For example, Benjamin Franklin maintained that the destroyed tea must be repaid and offered to do it with his own money.

The British government responded by closing the Boston harbor

The Boston Tea Party proved to be one of so many reactions which soon led to the American Revolutionary War.

In February, 1775, Britain passed the Conciliatory Resolution.

The Conciliatory Resolution was a resolution passed by the British Parliament in an attempt to reach a peaceful settlement with the Thirteen Colonies.

The Tea Act was repealed with the Taxation of Colonies Act
