I’m going to present the notion « Family and the Idea of Progress »

But what is an “Idea of Progress”

Progress is the idea that the world and society can evolve positively in terms of science, technology, modernization, living conditions and family.

However the idea of progress is still debated between those who consider that it’s beneficial and those for whom it’s harmful.

We are going to wonder ”How does evolution of society influence family structures?”

We are going to try to answer this question with the help of documents and statistics, which we analyzed in the classroom.

Firstly we are going to see the evolution of family, since the 1950s.

Secondly we are going to examine the reasons of evolutions within the structure of the family.

To start, we are going to see the historical evolution of the american family durant two periods, before the great depression and after the second world war. To illustrate it, we are going to help us of the text entitled "The nuclear American family", written in 1997 by Linda Nicholson and extract by "The Myth of the traditional family".

The family became seen as the site of leisure and consuption where, ideally, leisure activies were carried out together.

But nowadays, the society is affected by a new scourge. Indeed, according to a text written by Rae anna blake the 16th july of 2008, and extract by "Side effects if a step-family". Yes, step family is being replaced the traditional family because according to the figures seen in class, in 5 years, there was be an increase of 25% of children who lives with half parents.

In this text, we see that it's not always easy to live with step parents, but you have to be strong mentally. It's not a nightmare, you just learn to adapt and make efforts.

We have seen in class the evolution of family who has more changed. Indeed new family with gay parents, or single parent take place on the traditional family.

But why the traditional family constituted by married parents and children, is replaced by this new type of family ?

Since the second world war and the Great Depression, the economic situation is more difficult for all families than before and the situation economic let to paid services, thanks to the industrialisation especially.

Family of 2000s forms later - the average age of mothers at
