Part 1 - Jobs

1. Hélène needs to speak English when :

-She is with the groups of American or British visitors.

-She gives guided tours in English to many tourists of different nationalities.

-She uses English for Russian, Japanese, Chinese tourists who do not have tours in their languages.

-She prepares her presentations in English.

2. The expressions that Hélène uses for her presentations.

-If she knows the site, she doesn’t have research to do but she has to find out ask much as can about the group for adapts her presentation, depending on their level of interest.

-If she’s not familiar with the site, she prepares her presentation in many ways as she would in French.

 She collects as much informations that she can, if possible in English.

 She puts it all into the right order and she eliminates what is not important

 She prepares a series of notes.

-When she presents somewhere for the first time in English, she practices it with her friends.

-If she needs to use new, technical words, she tries to find the pronunciation. She can ask a teacher that she knows for help her.

3. Hélène gives five advices to anyone who has to make their first presentation in English :

-Thoroughly prepare the presentation in the ways have just described

-Make a series of notes but don’t write out the all presentation, looks and sounds are unprofessional

-Use a simple and clear language, many of people of the groups will not native speakers of English

-Unless guiding a group of specialist is not necessary to learn huge lists of architectural or other vocabulary. Most of the your group will not interested in technical details.

-Learn the key words and structures it will allow them to give a good general presentation.

Part 2 - Welcoming

1. Greet the group : Good morning everyone

2. Introduce yourself :My name’s Hélène and I’m your guide

3. Say what you are going to show your group : This morning we going to visit the grounds and interior of the château

4. Ask people to do something (directing people) : So if you’d like to follow me we can started our visit.

5. Indicate exactly where something is : If you look down there by the river, just next to the wall of the château you can see the remains of the fish tank.
