Queen Victoria

She was born at Kensington Palace, London, in 1819. She was the only daughter of Edward, Duke of Kent and granddaughter of King George III.

She was lively and had a gift for drawing and painting. She was educated by a governess at home. She is sixteen when she first met her future husband, Prince Albert, her cousin.

She became Queen in 1837 at the age of 18, after the death of King William IV who had no legitimate children who survived. She is the first queen to be crowned since 1702.

She felt in love with the German prince Albert and marry him in 1840. She then launched the fashion of the white wedding dress, which was not done before. They had 9 children. She became grandmother at the age of 39.

The queen and the prince enjoy a simple family life in the countryside. The royal way of life is less rich that former kings. In one generation, “Victorian values” will transform the mentalities of the nobles. She gives a more bourgeois style to the crown.

She is associated with Britain's great age of industrial expansion, economic progress, Industrial Revolution, and Empire. For example, she is one of the first sovereigns to use the railway regularly.

Great Britain had a global influence in the world, thanks to an economic prosperity, and the Great Exhibition in the famous Crystal Palace in 1851.It was imagined and designed by Prince Albert himself to show the greatness of England and the hopes given by the Industrial Revolution. It leads to a magnificent success.

Queen Victoria was deeply attached to her husband and she sank into depression after he died, aged 42, in 1861 and took no further part in public affairs. She lived in seclusion for a long time and was criticised for it.

Seven attempts were made on Victoria's life, between 1840 and 1882 but her courageous attitude towards these attacks greatly strengthened her popularity. She was persuaded to go back onto the political scene by her Prime Minister 

The Queen played an important role as far as diplomacy was concerned. Her influence during the middle years of her reign (1860 to 1880) was generally used to support peace and reconciliation. In 1877 Victoria became Empress of India thanks to her Prime Minister, Benjamin Disraeli. The queen met the king of France Louis Philippe, and the emperor napoleon the third.

In 1887, during the festivities of his Golden Jubilee, the official banquet brought together fifty European sovereigns and princes.

She died in 1901. Her reign was the second longest (after Queen Elizabeth’s reign), indeed she reign more than 63 years.
