 Biography of Charles dickens :

Charles dickens was born in 7 September 1812 in the Hampshire and died at 58 years old in 1870. He was the most popular novelist of his period(the Victorian England). Dickens is famous for sometimes fantastic plots and for his realistic portrayal of London.

He comes from a poor family and when Charles was 12, he was marked by the incarceration of his father in a prison. The novelist discovers the poverty when he worked in a factory in shoe polish. When his father was liberated, he spends 10 months again in the factory and after that he return to school. With this personal experience, he can publish lots of weekly magazines about the reality of the poor child which have lots of success.

Dickens hates her mother because she wants to take advantage with his job to have a better life and she doesn't want him to return to school.

During his life, he defends the right of the child, the woman and the teaching and today his books are translated into lots of languages and the reader likes Dikens for this humour and his critics of the society.

Summary of « Oliver Twist »

The story takes place in the Nineteenth Century.

At the age of 9,Oliver Twist (an orphan) runs away from his workhouse when he was born and brought up because he is drive out to ask for an additional ration of food.

He decided to go in London probably to find a better life and his travel spend seven days.

When he arrived in London, he was exhausted and starving. He is soon welcomed in a gang of pickpockets lead by a dishonest old man (Fagin). He's teaching at Oliver how steal the middle-class person. Thanks to this he met Mr.Brownlow, a rich person who decided to adopt him but Fagin and his partner(Bill Sikes) kidnap Oliver to burglaries Mr. Brownlow's fancy house. Nancy (the mistress of Bill Sikes)cautiously reveals at Brownlow that Oliver is staying with Fagin and that the authorities will find them easily. Brownlow leaves to call the police.

 

The artful Dodger :

The young boy, around the same age as Oliver, is a skilled pickpocket. He was forced to thieve and work for Fagin to survive. The Artful Dodger is so good at pickpocketing, that he is the leader of Fagin's gang of child thieves. He speaks like a man, and he wears men's clothes.

He wears a fancy hat, a brown suit and a tie. Dodger looks like a gentleman. Furthermore, he talks and walk like a man and respects Fagin

In spite of his small size, it's a really good thief.

Nancy is the lover of Bill Sikes. She is a member of Fagin's gang and she is the only girl in the gang and she is as well a prostitute. She gets on well with Oliver, defends him when he has a problem and helps him in some situations because she is touched by his orphan destiny.
