Myths and heroes

I'm going to talk about the notion Myths and Heroes through Steve Jobs and

A myth is a story of gods or heroes, and hero represent an object of extreme admiration and devotion, admired for his achievements, noble qualities and great courage.

To illustrate this notion, I chose to talk about heroes and that can represent them to society.

We shall wonder : How ordinary people become heroes in the eyes of society and influences people's careers ?

To answer this question, I am going to use two documents studied this year : « Steve Jobs : Innovation, capitalism and the American Dream » and « a successful woman ».

First of all, I will to show the influence of Steve Jobs, then, I present a self made woman: Oprah Winfrey.

  1. Example of Steve Jobs :

A myth or hero may have a cultural influence. These people with the qualification of "hero" often have influence on our society. In this category, we can talk about Steve Jobs. He had an ordinary life story but he was a genius. Steve Jobs is considered by some people as a hero. He was vulnerable as other people, for example he left school : he didn't graduate from university, fought to make his company work, he was fired and had a lot of health problems. According to the document « Steve Jobs : Innovation, capitalism and the American Dream » Steve Jobs represented everything that is right with America. He was the pioneer who created products that would change the world. He was an inventor, he improved and advanced the computer and the mobile phone industry. He can be considered a hero because to make the top he was a hard-worker, Today he remains example of success. Steve Jobs has become a symbol of high technology, a major figure in consumer electronics.

  1.  Example of Oprah Winfrey :

We studied a text called « a successful woman », it’s about Oprah Winfrey. She is an influential woman, a famous talk show host, a child-advocate. She from Mississippi and was born during the segregation. Her youth was mark by a lot of difficult episodes and family problems. Oprah Winfrey is a figure of success, who showed that the American Dream could be a reality. She started from scratch and overcame the obstacles of being an African American girl during the segregation, and now she has a media empire (TV, channel, radio, magazine…). Indeed she illustrates the myth of the self-made woman and become a symbol of American dream for blacks peoples. Oprah Winfrey was given a humanitarian award by the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity. It is an example of a person who started from scratch and finally succeed, thanks to fortitude.

To conclude, I totally agree with the idea that ordinary people can become heroes but I do not find that one can describe people like Steve Jobs or Oprah Winfrey like heroes. However for some people they represent a model, an ideal human-being. But, for me a hero is a person who saves lives like the firemen or the policemen. So, Steve Jobs and Oprah Winfrey embody both the American dream. However this dream is more and more criticized and questioned. According to Obama, the American dream is in danger of becoming a myth, not a reality.
