A la voix passive, c'est l’auxiliaire BE qui est conjugué au temps du verbe de la phrase active. Il est suivi du participe passé.

On utilise la voix passive pour mettre en valeur certaines informations dans la phrase :

Le premier élément de la phrase est mis en relief, en lumière par une THEMATISATION .

Ex : Slavery is outlawed (by the 13th Amendment in the United States) . → élément mis en valeur : le sujet

       The slaves were treated like animals (by the Southern people). → élément mis en valeur :  le sujet

Le sujet peut être omis lorsqu'il est inconnu, peu important ou évident d'après le contexte .

Le passif sert aussi à traduire le « ON » français.  On m'a dit que.... → I was told that....
